VFD Basics for Water and Wastewater Systems
The drives run your pumps. This is the day your operators learn what the drives are actually doing.
Every treatment plant, lift station, and distribution system in the country runs on variable frequency drives, and most of the people who depend on them were never taught how they work. When a drive trips at 2 AM, the operator on call either knows what to record before resetting, or resets and hopes. This one-day class closes that gap.
Students work on live ABB drives with real motors. They enter nameplate data, run a first start, walk the speed range, and work a real fault scenario from captured trend data. Everything is taught in operator terms: the pump, the motor, and the drive as one machine, and what protects all three.
VFDs don't fail. Installations fail them. That is the thesis of the book this class is built on, and by the end of the day your operators can explain why.
Who Should Attend
Water and wastewater operators at every certification grade. Utility maintenance staff. Rural water system personnel. Circuit riders. Public works crews who own pump stations. No electrical background or drive experience required.

Program Structure
One day, 8:00 to 4:00, on-site at your facility or training venue
Morning: what a drive is and why installations decide everything.Why drives are in your plant: control, energy, and the affinity laws in operator terms (half speed is one-eighth the power, and that is where your energy savings live). What a drive does to the power feeding a pump motor, explained at the whiteboard with the jargon translated. The installation foundation: heat, moisture, and dust in pump houses and lift stations, enclosures, grounding, and cable basics.
Lab B1: Motor Nameplate and ID Run. Rotation groups on the live rig. Every student enters motor data and runs the identification sequence.
Afternoon: the pump, the trip, and the first response.The pump and the motor as one machine: why a fan-cooled motor overheats at low speed even under light load, minimum frequency, ramp times, and what protects thrust bearings on vertical turbine and submersible pumps. Then the part every operator remembers: when it trips. The first-response sequence, what to record before you reset, when to call for help, and a walked fault scenario built from real trend data. The day closes with maintenance basics and a one-page operator checklist to take back to the plant.
Lab B2: Supervised First Start. Rotation groups. Start the drive, walk the speed range, and learn what the display is telling you.
Continuing Education Credit
The class delivers 7.0 instructional contact hours, documented on a timed agenda with breaks and lunch excluded. Every attendee receives a certificate of completion stating exact contact hours, course title, date, location, and instructor signature, with a scored before-and-after assessment behind it.
